HEY DJ KEEP PLAYING THAT SONG

Heat wave struck LA this weekend.  We went from cold rain last Monday to suffocating humid heat five days later.  As a result we lazed out on the heavy except for barging the Days Inn pool up the street.

I also went to see Wicked, the musical.  Instead of being witty and addressing how nerdy and potentially weird that is, let's just move past all that because it was totally enjoyable.  Musicals are for sure the guiltiest of pleasures.  It's a detailed narrative condensed into a series of pop songs, with no advertisements and the human element of error and spontaneity.  What's not to like?  It brought back memories of all my favorite musicals like Annie and Sound of Music.  I can still remember virtually every lyric to all the main songs, even though I haven't watched them in years.  Makes you really think about how deep those things stick with you and how it's basically a part of your subconscious and yourself and how possibly "wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings" could seriously be one of my favorite things.  But was it my favorite thing before I heard the song or *because* I heard the song?

ALMOST EPIC

Just got back from the Big Apple and I'm suffering from the NYC Blues.  It's cold here in LA and funny enough I've got a sore throat and the sniffles.  That's more sickness in two months than I've had for the past year.  Luckily I think I am catching it quick and with the help of salt water, Zicam, Vitamin C and some ginger tea I think we may avert the worse.

Bailey and I headed out to NYC to check out Rick and Buddy's Deathbowl to Downtown film premiere.  It was rad and a solid film.  I hope you all get to see it sometime soon.  80s Gonz footage, Jeremy Henderson, Kessler dog and all that made it a fun watch.  For the afterparty, they hired double decker tour buses to take us to the next spot.  The open air seating was radical and pretty much the only photo I got.  Sorry.  When we got to the afterparty I proceeded to forget everything at the open bar and stuff my face with -- yes, it's true -- Shake Shack catered sliders (veggie, regular, bacon cheeseburger) and pulled pork sandwiches.  What?  Best party ever: free food, free drinks, free ride.

The rest of our short trip was marred by rain and coldness but it was cool.  Got to hang out with the homies, especially catch up with Ip, and feast at all my favorite restaurants though I didn't get a chance to hit Momofuku.  Guess that's what our next trip next month will be.  I promise to take a picture of all of our insane meals so you can go on the Keep NYC Eating Tour.

MANIC MONDAY

Actually this Monday's not too manic.  Still recovering from the epic Hamburger Eyes show on Sat at Hope Gallery.  I didn't stay out late or anything, I'm just recovering from how rad it was.  Is it sick? Yes.  The show was amazing and the turn out was perfect.  The photos were the best ever yet and the new issue of the mag is solid.  I think the big print size was a rad format for the pics and they sold a shit load of art that night.  Highlights of the night were:

1) Lavender space cake.  Thanks for the last slice.  Tony is the man!  He looks all burly on the outside but then you see his anklet and you know he is a sensitive dude who can cook.
2) The girl outside the gallery with the campsite setup grilling vegan chili dogs with fried onions.  Delish.
3) Being able to drink on the street.  I guess that's kind of rando but it's cool to just chill and not get hassled.  Also Virgil's Rootbeer from the shop around the corner -- so good and creamy it beats a Tecate any day.  Or some days at least.
4) Ray's hair.  Looking good these days though I do like it shaved too.
5) Duh, the pics.  Best show yet.
