Fireworks with Mary J., Deathbowl to Downtown, Baby Keeps

Okay so maybe the Day to Day section should really be called the Week to Week.  What can I say the pressure of the blog world makes me crack.  Who really cares what we're going through?  Don't most people only care about what they're doing?  Having a blog is by nature embarassing because it's an assumption that what you have to say is even remotely interesting to another person.  Is even 1% of my everyday blog worthy? My apologies in advance.

Last week we went to the Mary J. and Jay Z show at the Hollywood Bowl, by far my favorite venue in all of Los Angeles.  We didn't actually officially attend the show because we didn't go inside.  Tickets were really expensive and having a business means being broke all the time.  There's a rad vantage point that shows the Bowl in all its nightime glory and the sound is pretty decent -- the only thing is that you have to hike up a crazy incline with pretty much no path and no cover from security guards and lurkers at the bum camps.

Mary killed it.  Her latest record is a regular on our playlist in the office.  How many times have we screamed, "You figure it out!" Even with the echo and no visuals she was amazing.  Jigga was cool too but he didn't play any of the hits of my era aka Girls, Hard Knock, Can I Get A, etc.  It was all American Gangster and 99 Problems -- semi-yawn.

If you're in New York in early May check out the screening of Rick, Buddy and Noah's movie Deathbowl to Downtown, a film documenting the history skateboarding in New York.  If you don't know, now you know.

Also, I know we already posted something on the zoo so I'll spare you the pics of adorable animals.  Just want to tell you the important thing we discovered when taking a half day on Monday and doing a Keep Company hangout.  The best soft serve ice cream -- so good you didn't even know it could be that good -- is at the stand by the giraffes.  Creamy, thick, but clean and perfect with the cake cone.  And HUGE.  Don't miss out.

Sneak peek of Baby Keeps coming out next Spring.  Go get pregnant.

Guanajuato, The Flu, and The Rza

If you're wondering why we've been so lazy and not updated the day to day, my apologies.  I went away to Mexico to work on a special project we're doing with Autumn skate shop which we're really psyched on. We go way back with Autumn and I'll never forget when I was having a bad day, Kristen, one of the owners, gave me a vegan cupcake from her kid's birthday party and it really made me feel better. Thanks again.  If you don't know who Autumn is, then you probably don't skate or live in New York City. They've got a great shop in the East Village that has been a community dug out for years. If you're ever in town stop by. They rule and it's usually staffed by some goofy peeps or Dave, the other owner, himself.

Mexico was amazing and beautiful. The international terminal at LAX was not. It was insane just trying to get to the gate. It was janky too. Once in Mex, we got a chance to hang out in Leon and Guanajuato, a  multi-tiered, candy-colored utopia with great food, nice people, and a rich history. We got hooked up proper through our friend Renol who is a Mexican skate photographer who seriously gave us the loc's perspective on both cities. Plus his mom made us pozole (incredible) and gave me a tutorial on all the main chiles they use down there, from pasilla to chile de arbol.

Guanajuato was a mining town with lots of crazy deposits in the earth, some of which have the power of mummifying bodies over time. They even have a crazy museum where you can check some out and seriously it was creepy as fuck but really amazing too. Some of them still had their shoes on! Gave me the heebee geebs.

The trip was only supposed to last a couple days so it really wasn't supposed to cause too much hold up in the day to day updates.  But then my face got all red and hot and I couldn't move my limbs and what do you know, big time flu and no love to give. Teca, my cat, was chill and hung out with me most of the time but Bailey was still skating and surfing down in Mexico so it was just me and the cat. Steph checked out of the store a bunch to help me out and get meds so if you came by the shop and it was closed don't be too mad, there were extenuating circumstances.

I was starving but couldn't eat anything for four days, my own personal worst torture ever. I was craving on the heavy, but then one bit of the solid stuff and it was a no go. I finally started to feel like myself again even though I couldn't eat and I was cramping all over. Wendy from Ooga Booga called me up with tickets to see RZA -- backstage and everything!  I contemplated it super hard and after hearing some sage advice from Chuck, I realized I would always regret missing being *this* close to the RZA so I went, wore myself out and had good time. The best part was when he sprayed the crowd with champagne and these two young Asian nerds in the front got wet and they freaked out like it was manna from heaven. It was awesome. I thought they were going to explode. It was kind of a weird crowd. There was a dude in the front who looked like he worked for RVCA taking photos and was waving an Obama sign in between shots.  Rando. Also, I know these photos are lame but it was on my iphone and there's no flash so it's all I got.

After that all I could do was pass out and try to recuperate. Finally getting my act together and so here it is: the day to day.
